F5 Vmware Installation Help

hello all,

am tryin to install the virtual edition of f5 on my pc

my first vmware attempt :-)

i have vmware installed on my windows7 machine

and then i downloaded iso 'BIGIP-10.2.0.1707.0'

tried loading the iso image to the vmware ,

at the second step : it says the operating system could not be identified and i needed to add it manually later

i know its Linux , but there are too many options for me to choose , not sure which one to select - help !

should i be using freebsd ? maybe ?

any inputs beyond here are much appreciated

cheers,

Roger

  • I am new in F5, but I think I know whats going on.

LTM VE is just a virtual machine, and you can't force any layer 2 traffic to go through it, it is out of control of this VM.

I guess if it is a physical box, you can plug the server directly into the F5 and force it to go through the box.

I tested VE and make it as a layer 3 device, so the IIS server use it as a default gateway, and it is working ok.

  • You'd still want to define a virtual server on the same subnet as the server(s). Enable SNAT automap on the virtual server to ensure that replies from the server(s) come back through LTM. Then make sure clients are connecting to the virtual server IP--not the server IP.

You can use tcpdump to check the packets:

    tcpdump -enni 0.0 -Xs0 host CLIENT_IP or host SERVER_IP

    -e = print the layer 2 information

-nn = don't resolve ports or IP addresses to names

    -i 0 = all switch port interfaces

-X = print hex output for packets

-s0 = don't limit the packet size that is recorded

  • hey all,

    any pointers ?

i got it working after using my wifi router as the default gateway

any ideas to my original question. am getting a random /32 ip each time i connect to the usb based internet connection

unable to find the default gateway for this connection

with this setup , will i be able to connect to the internet from the ltm
