Hi,
Can you give us more details about your DB solution (oracle, Mysql, ...).
As you know the traffic used for DB can be very conssomateur, in terms of bandwidth. So if you can leave your VS in L4 ( LTM can't natively parse SQL reads and writes to implement more advanced load balancing scenarios ), the traffic does not rise in the layers and it conssome less resource.
The most important is to set a a strong monitor (oracle, PostgresSQL, Mysql, depending your solutions).
Then if you need persistance, in this case you can use "src address" or "UIE persistence" depending of your VS.
Some customer use "Priority Group Activation" and let only one node manage traffic and if an problem occur the other member take over...
