Good point. I'd definitely suggest choosing completely random words as your root word, such as "catblog" "peruart" "smashcorn" to help minimizing brute force attacks, and then changing that root word as often as you feel comfortable, probably once/month. The two things you want to guard against are someone knowing those words and then the pattern, as you suggest. As long as they don't know both, though, then your passwords become stronger than a standard 'mary1974' password. :)
