high latency while pinging hosts behind F5 LTM VE

Hi all,

we're experiencing a strange behaviour with our F5 LTM VE.

all (virtual) server on particular VLANs that uses a F5 self ip as their default gateway has a very high latency pinging host outside their VLAN (about 10 ms) while normally they should ping them at < 1 ms.

we have set up a forwarding(IP) VS for allow routing between VLANs.

it seems that F5 introduces a very high latency on communication among VLANs. this would lead to performance problems when application servers are in those VLANs while their database is on different subnet.

it there some setting that I need to check?

thanks,

  • What flavor of VE is this? If it is the self provisioned "Trial" edition (1mbps throughput IIRC) or one of the "lab" VEs (10mbps)?

If so that is probably what a ping looks like on such a slow network...

  • Hi all, sorry for the long delay but (fortunately) I was on holidays and came back yesterday. anyway, I work with a standard big ip VE with a regular license for LTM module only. the network looks good, I've already checked any kind of thing related (switch ports, cables, hardware and so on) without any kind of problem.

the Virtual appliance was deployed following the KB in the F5 website...

    thanks,

  • are you familiar with tcpdump? would be worth to check if you can pinpoint if the loss actually happens at the bigip or perhaps somewhere else.

find out when the packet enters the bigip and when it leaves it.

as for causes, is the unit not on high CPU or on too weak VMWare hardware?
