I need direction on a F5 task I have been asigned.

I was recently given a task to do the following. I know absolutely nothing about an F5 except sorta kinda it's role in the system setup.

The setup I have to deal with is that we have two production servers behind a F5. This F5 services many other servers outside our project scope. Our two servers are in a fail over configuration, not a load balanced or other such configuration.

Task: Monitor the F5 to see which of the two servers the F5 is currently routing traffic. We have several NT style jobs that run as services on both of these servers, however we only want the jobs to be running on the server currently in service. When the F5, for what ever reason, switches the traffic from one box to the other, we need to start the jobs on the newly active box and stop them on the other box.

In short... I am pretty sure this F5 system in some way can manage this situation or need, but I have no idea where to start. I have started with the API and the intro's and such.

I'd like to know two things.

1. How might I achieve this task as I have described.

2. What is the preferred way to manage this fail over type task with the F5.

Thanks and regards.

  • Do you want the F5 to load balance those two servers or just use 1 as long as it's up? You can certainly query the status of a node you're load balancing and should be able to use an api to move services.
