ASM policy deployment wizard sees no traffic

I'm admittedly a novice, but the steps here seem pretty clear. In following the tutorial, I already have a virtual server linked to a pool that is definitely distributing traffic to its nodes. I then create an application security class that uses "send to pool" as it's action and I selected the pool associated with the traffic of interest. Upon selecting the web application associated with the newly created class and running through the wizard, the F5 tells me that it detected no traffic even though I am hitting the site and watching the logs scroll (yes I am using an externally routed address to hit the server). I can't seem to figure out why the ASM can't see the traffic. Obviously, I'm missing something important. Any advice on how to trouble shoot this?
