Upgrade LTM from 11.1 to 11.2

Any help would be great, I have been trying to upgrade two boxes for while and I have not been able to do it.

to be honest I have not done ths before, so this is all a bit new.

I have copyied the iso file onto the box, I have installed it in a new volumn HD1.3

so far so good.

When I change the boot location, it fails and when I log back in to the CLI, it says "deactivated licence".

I have reactivated the licence using the GUI and CLI and each time I reboot to the new volumn it fails, if I boot back to the old volumn it works again.

Is there a licence file per volumn ?

I have followed all of the docs on the website, edited the licence string using VI and using GUI and nothing seems to work. I am doing something basic wrong.

Once thing I have noticed in the licence file it says "Licensed version : 10.2.3", but I am running 11.1 and trying to upgrade to 11.2

Any idea what I am doing wrong ?

Graham

  • Does the device have a valid support contract?

Can you run this at the CLI and tell us what the Service Check Date is please? '[tmsh] show sys license'
  • Hi Steve,

It does have a valid support contract with a 3rd party F5 partner, but I really wanted to figure this out my self, as I am studing for the F5 exams

    Licensed Version 10.2.3

    Service Check Date 2013/01/07

I am current active boot is HD1.2 that is running 11.1 and I have installed 11.2 in HD1.3, so using switchboot, I change the active partition and reboot

so as it boots back up, I get the following messages.

[root@{ourhostname}:INOPERATIVE:] config Jan 7 12:49:55 CGH-OLA-WEB-LBL-02 emerg mcpd[5408]: 0107070e:0: Software version not covered by service agreement. Reactivate license before continuing.

Jan 7 12:49:55 {ourhostname} emerg mcpd[5408]: 01070608:0: License is not operational (expired or digital signature does not match contents).

    [root@{ourhostname}:REACTIVATE LICENSE:Disconnected] config

I have reactivated the licence, as you can see from the Service Check Date, but it does not seem to be working.

  • Hi Graham,

If you check your serial number here (https://secure.f5.com/validate/validate.jsp) does it show an active support contract? If you want to run 11.2.1 you'd need to have had support on the release date of 2012-08-20:

sol7727: License activation may be required prior to software upgrade

    https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/7000/700/sol7727.html

If you did have support after that date, you could try re-activating the license on the slot you're upgrading from and then retry the upgrade. This is the best practice process. But generally, it should work if you re-activate the license after the upgrade too.

  • Hi Arron,

Thanks for the reply. The dates say 4th December 2012, but we brought these in June / July time.

Does this mean we did not register them when we first got them ??

I was hoping to be able to figure this out, shall I just raise a case with the company that does our F5 maintenance ?

  • You can ignore the 10.2.3 version in the license.

Your support contract expires on 04-11-2015 and your service check date shows you re-activated today. So you should be able to upgrade. What do you see if you run 'reloadlic' on the command line of the 11.2.x slot?

If that doesn't work, can you try re-activating the license on the 10.2.3 slot and upgrade a new slot to 11.2.1?

If you still see the license issue, then I'd open a support case.

  • [root@{ourhostname}:INOPERATIVE:] config reloadlic

    [root@{ourhostname}:INOPERATIVE:Disconnected] config

It just changed the prompt to disconnected

I will raise a case, that for all you help, this is still a bit new to me
