Semi-new to F5 - what to read and where to start?

Just want to start by saying HI ALL!!!

Im semi-new to F5 but my main job is to become a F5 master by the end of the year. Im asking for help on where to start?

For example, if I were to apply for a position for Field Services (I know F5 has them)... what do I need to know to get hired? Im a thru-and-thru Cisco guy. Its what I do well! But, F5 is peaking my interest and Im thinking about changing career paths. So, without having to take a few weeks off to take an F5 class (its never gonna happen since I have to pay for it out of my own pocket) where do I start?

Im thinking:

1. Wireshark/TCPDUMP

2. Learn CentOS

3. Read some HTTP and DNS books?

4. Some F5 friendly programming language?

Thx in advance

  • Considering your background, you won't find the basics too challenging.

It might be worth you following the new certification program as the knowledge requirements of the exams probably fulfill your requirements too. The exam blueprints can be found here: http://www.f5.com/support/training-certification/certification/.

I'd suggest you get the LTM VE v10.1 90 Day Trial from here: https://www.f5.com/trial/big-ip-ltm-virtual-edition.php

Well over 20 manuals and guides for BIG-IP, TMOS and LTM can be found here: http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/versions.11_2_0.html

Free, self-paced web-based training related to basic technologies and concepts, changes in new software versions and basic LTM configuration are available via the F5 University available here: https://university.f5.com/
