Netbackup Not working via LTM

Our SAN team are still using Netbackup to backup servers that ar enot SAN attached. The big-ip 9.4.3 is not passing the traffic. I have set the Virtual address and pool addresses as any service but it still doesn;t work. By the look of the tcpdump the backup server is using bpcd which i think is a deamon.

Anyone got any ideas of how to get this working?

  • If you are pointing the backup process at a virtual server with the pool I imagine the backup process is getting load balanced, which is not likely to work. :D

Assuming that you have the typical external/internal VLAN scenario on BIG-IP, where the servers have the BIG-IP as their default gateway, you need to have either NATs for each individual server so there is a direct path to each server, or use a forwarding virtual server that allows traffic directly to the backend VLAN.

For example, if your external VLAN is 10.10.10.x and internal is 192.168.1.x, the servers are 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11, you can create a NAT on 10.10.10.10 and 10.10.10.11 that point directly to their 192 equivalents, and point the backup process to the 10 addresses.

Or you can create a network virtual server 192.168.1.0, port 0, and change the type from Standard to Forwarding(IP) and the BIG-IP will act like a router and simply forward any traffic destined for the 192 network through. This will most likely require a static route on whatever BIG-IP's default gateway is that sends the traffic for 192.168.1.0 to the BIG-IP's external address. But then you can point the backup process directly to the servers at 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11.

    Hope that helps,
