Epic loadingtimes in web UI

Hi guys,

does anyone else experience humongous loading time of the GUI sometimes? We have one F5 that takes up to 20 seconds to load the skin.jsp no matter what browser I try. Here's what HTTPfox plugin in Firefox reports (17.346 is the loading time):

02:23:46.11517.3461493174GET200text/htmlhttps://f53.address.int/tmui/tmui/skins/Default/scripts/skin.jsp

No other file takes that long and since this file is loaded on every page it's unbearable to use the GUI. We do however have other F5s installed that do not behave like this and some of our computers doesn't experience this at all, there the GUI is quick and snappy.

Any ideas?

/Regards Stefan

  • We had the same problem on a 9.4.3 BigIp--support basically said "We can't do anything, but try IE. It should load faster."

So far, that seems to work.
  • Which Firefox and LTM versions are you trying this with? I haven't seen any issues with Firefox 3.0 - 3.5 with the admin GUI in 9.2 - 10.1. Maybe try a clean install of firefox 3.5 with no extensions to start with?

Else from the Apache side, do you see any errors in /var/log/ltm or the log files in /var/log/httpd?

  • Don't count out infrastructure. I've had similar symptoms twice because of different DNS problems. In once case the /etc/resolv.conf did a lookup of localhost.com, which is a valid internet domain, but apparently was having name resolution issues at the time. In another case, I had a bad DNS server listed in the config.

Check the port duplex of your switch that connects the management interface. Check that you haven't got a duplex mismatch. if you do you'll severely affect the throughput of the network traffic (It'll work, but very slowly).

  • I have seen both of the issues that smp and Hamish describe in the past, so definitely start with their suggestions first. If you've got a duplex issue it's likely you'll see collisions showing up on the switch and what ever interface you're hitting on the BigIP.

  • The weird thing is that a colleague that sits on the same net as me is not experiencing these issues which ought to rule out duplexing issues or other infrastructure issues close to the F5.
  • Which LTM version are you running? I've recently seen very slow load times on 9.4.4 and older 9.4.x versions that were fixed with an upgrade to v9.4.8 or v10.x.

  • Have a look at this solution, which may help:
