Turn off autolasthop and use static routing?
I don't want to patronise you but the BIG-IP has a feature called autolasthop which means that traffic coming from a device will be sent back to that device. For instance, if you have service provider links via devices A & B, traffic received from device A will be sent back to device A and so on. The BIG-IP stores the layer 2 address with the connection flow. If you turn this feature off then the BIG-IP will use normal IP routing (or gateway pools)

I assume you are refering to client initiated traffic going outbound, not the other way around yes?

Thanks for validating that. So, surely the point of the LC (which I'm not familiar with by the way) is to balance across the links?
I know, there's always a reason etc ;) So, I'm not sure how LC works but can you not setup a VS that you point that 172 subnet to, that only uses SP3 and another for everyone else that balances across SP1 and SP2, rather than use an iRule?
