Auto Failback Disabled But Still Happening

Hello All,

I have two 4200V LTMs running version 11.2.1 Build 1225.0 in an HA pair. They are setup in one arm mode and utilize one traffic group for failover objects (VIPs, SNATs, Self IP). Last night I applied a hotfix - I applied the hotfix to the standby unit (002) and rebooted it. I was unable to force to standby the active unit (001), which after doing some research learned that that feature isn't functional in an HA setup -> http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/14000/500/sol14515.html. So I shutdown the links to the active unit (001) and it then went standby and the standby unit (002) went active. After upgrading 001 and then re-enabling the links the 001 unit immediately went active. On the traffic group configuration I do not have Auto Failback enabled but do have the 001 unit set as the default device. Is there anyway to prevent the 001 unit from immediately going active or is there a better approach to force it to standby as opposed to shutting down the links?

    Brian,

Have you got an Active Bonus set? I thought that stopped the "flapping" of active to standby.

I usually just disable the HA group when I do HF installs, so I can use Force to Standby. The SOL you reference suggests forcing offline as an alternative. I haven't used this method though. Something to test I suppose.

    Hope this helps,

If you add an active bonus to both HA groups (one on each big-ip) then the active bonus only applies on the active itself (even though you add a bonus onto the standby HA group too).

So this would mean that when interfaces are bought back up on the standby device the active will still have a higher score and remain active. No flapping.

No need to manually change the Active Bonus on the fly. Just set it and let it do its stuff.
