can we install two or three f5 modules in one appliance

Dears We have a enterprise cache project and for load balancing traffic to cache engines we are planning to use F5 VIPRION Load Balancer but we have some unanswered questions one of them is can we install more than one modules on one appliance for example we need local traffic manager , enterprise manager , advanced routing module , policy enforcement module. can we install all of them on VIPRION 2250 blade or for each of these modules we need separate appliance please explain about F5 modules ?? they will active with license or each of them has their own software then need their own hardware

Regards

  • personally i would contact your local F5 partner or F5 team with such questions, you seem to want quite a lot and going to pay quite some money and (again personally) for that i wouldnt go to a forum to get that sorted out.

anyway have a look at: http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/releasenotes/product/relnote-ltm-11-5-0.html

at the start it explains how many you modules you can put on an appliance, it is the memory that count. btw enterprise manager is an odd one, that requires its own appliance. also EM seems to be on its way out, BIG IQ seems to be the future. advanced routing doesnt count to any limit i believe.

that explain what you can put on one appliance. for the viprion you have to look at how you set it up, basically look at the stats of one blade. it becomes a little bit more complex if you use vCMP.

  • Dears In my project i have 20GB Bandwidth and wanna put F5 loadbalancer inline in the network please help me to choose correct model of Load balancer . The local partnet suggest me C2400 chassis with one 2250 blade . another issue is about "advanced routing module" because local partner suggest using dynamic routing protocol and also "advanced routing module" my question is , if we use F5 Load balancer as bridge in network then we will not need to use dynamic routing protocol . anyway can we install LTM and advanced routing module in the same 2250 blade (2250 blade has 64GB RAM) In project we wanna apply policy and monitor several F5 blades (Viprion) , does BIG IQ meet our requirement ? As i read in document BIG-IQ only has functionality for "BIG-IP " hardware and there is not mentioned anything about viprion !!!!! please help me

  • ill just state it again, contact you local F5 team or partner and if you dont trust your partner (something i find rather shocking) just contact some other F5 partners and compare their input and let them explain it.

20Gb bandwidth seems to be supported in other platforms also, pretty much everything from 8950 and up. not sure on prices, would have to check with your partner about that. the 2250 blade does 80 Gbps L7/L4 throughput according to the data sheet.

advanced routing module isnt a full module as LTM, GTM, ASM ... and can be included with LTM without a problem. as you state yourself you only need it when you plan to do dynamic routing, i.e. OSPF, BGP, ... if you dont need it dont buy it, you can include it later on, just add a license. the 2250 blade with handle LTM on itself more then fine.

as for EM / BIG IQ they will both handle the Viprion platform fine, BIG-IP is more the software side then the hardware side anyway. personally i wonder how useful it is with only a few devices, but that is up to you. you can always add it later.

  • would you please send me some documents and info about BIG-IQ because there isn't enough info about BIG-IQ and i find this comment about BIG-IQ ver 4.3 "Warning: These procedures require that the BIG-IQ system is temporarily unavailable and unable to manage BIG-IP devices until the upgrade is complete. BIG-IP devices can continue to manage traffic during this time." and as i read BIG-IQ 4.2 is incompatible with some TMOS ver I'm so confused please help me

    Thanks
