clustering devices

I have a VE LTM 11.4.1 and two new 2000 units. I would like to cluster the two 2000 units and remove the VE from production. How can I copy the config from the VE to the two 2000 units? This way I can then make the cluster and remove the VE. Thanks.

    tolinrome,

In brief I'd configure the base networking on one of your 2000 units, license and provision the same modules, with the same hostname and ip addressing as the VE (do this off the network of course). If the 2000 was also v11.4.1 I'd restore the UCS file with the no-license and no-platform switches.

You should then have a copy of your VE on one of the 2000 units. I'd then configure the other 2000 with the base networking. I'd then create a HA pair on the first unit, introduce the second and configsync the configuration across.

There may be things I've missed but I hope this is a good start.

  • So restoring the UCS is a really good place to start, 100% agree. There are a number of caveats when doing that though. I've had the most luck when doing this kind of thing if I can get rid of all the things that are hardware specific, like interface configurations etc, before creating a UCS and trying to restore on a dissimilar platform. If that VE is in a "production" state, that's probably not doable.

A quick search got this information. This is using an SCF file rather than a UCS. Never done it that way, always hacked my way through the bigip.conf and bigip_base.conf. http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/14000/900/sol14906.html

If you want to use a UCS, give this a shot. Backup / Restor using a UCS http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/13000/100/sol13132.html

Heads up on SSL encrypted keys. http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/9000/400/sol9420.html
