bigip_add vs bigip_install vs ??

Ok,

I am currently running a pair of GTMs, one at HQ and one at DR with no problems. I now have a pair of LTM in active/standby running at HQ and one VE LTM running at DR. The GTMs were put in about three years ago and the LTMS about a year ago.

From what I understand from reading the "Integrating LTM into GTM network", it looks like I need to define the LTMs on the GTMs, then run the "bigip_add" command on the GTMS.

After doing this, what would I expect to happen to my bigip environment? Do I have to worry about losing anything? Will my LTMS go down? or any of its services?

My GTMs are running 11.3.0 HF8 and the LTMs are running 11.4.0 HF5.

I'm also opening a support case on this question as well.

Thoughts, Danny

  • Also, should I use bigip_install instead of bigip_add? Something else maybe? thx, dg
  • Also 2, the documentation on doing this hinted that the GTMs should be running the same version of OS as the LTMs in order to run the bigip_add utility. See chapter seven in document below.. https://support.f5.com/content/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_gtm/manuals/product/gtm-implementations-11-3-0/_jcr_content/pdfAttach/download/file.res/BIG-IP_Global_Traffic_Manager__Implementations.pdf Thoughts on this? Thanks, dg
  • So you are correct - first check that you have a route to the LTM and that the self-IP is set to Port Lockdown -> Default. Also check the versions of big3d on both devices as these should ideally be the same (check out SOL13703) and run big3d_install if not.

Setup the datacentre and server on the GTM and run bigip_add. It should all work perfectly - they will setup an iquery session to exchange details. If not, use iqdump to check out the iquery messages.

You shouldn't have any real changes on your LTM although GTM controls monitoring to be the optimum so you can find that your actively monitoring devices can change if you have crossovers between your datacentres.
