gateway monitor marks all memebers in pair down

hi,I have one pair F5 LTM which run in active/standby way. there is a gateway monitor for in the pair. One day the gateway is gone,I found both of them are standby ....

1:how to avoid this? if both of them can't reach gateway,no need to change active/standby role.

2:I also want to failover happen if one interface is down in primary, but if there is also another interface is down in standby, then no failover is needed ,how to achieve? Checked HA group,it seems I firstly need to add interface to a trunk, does it affect current infrasturre?

  • Hi Robert,

when using the legacy "Gateway Failsafe" configuration you risk standby/standby as you already figured out unfortunately.

The "HA Group" feature will be able to meet your requirements.

The HA group components will be calculated to a score per unit based on their availability which is compared between units in the device cluster. Due to the "active bonus" concept you will not observe a failover or standby/standby even if all HA group components will become unavailable and the score goes zero.

In case all units in the sync-failover device group score of zero or have the same score, the one with the highest management IP will go active.

In an HA group you can both use trunks and pools. Yes, it will be necessary to build trunks (even they have a single interface only) to use them in HA groups.

    Thanks, Stephan

  • hi,Stephan active bonus: A common reason to specify an active bonus is to prevent failover due to flapping, the condition where failover occurs frequently as a trunk member switches between availability and unavailability. In this case, you might want to prevent the HA scoring feature from triggering failover each time a trunk member is lost. You might also want to prevent the HA scoring feature from triggering failover when you make minor changes to the BIG-IP system configuration, such as adding or removing a trunk member.

Although you specify an active bonus value on each device, the BIG-IP system uses the active bonus specified on the active device only, to contribute to the score of the active device. The BIG-IP system never uses the active bonus on the standby device to contribute to the score of the standby device. Note: An exception to this behavior is when the active device score is 0. If the score of the active device is 0, the system does not add the active bonus to the active device score.

    hmm,confused by this.....

so BIGIP use active bonus to break a tie? or use mgt ip?

  • well,I got it after many tests just now. thanks very much

active bouns is used to break a tie

in case ,active bouns can't break, for example F5A(Active) 20+active bouns 5 = F5B 25,then management ip can break this.....
