Launching Office Web Apps fails first launch via APM

Currently we have an apm with sharepoint 2013 and office webapps. The pools point to an LTM that we have internally that have that sharepoint and OWA servers behind them.

The first time a user tries to launch an excel or word webapp, it fails with "Sorry, there was a problem and we can't open...."

The next launch of the doc works fine. If I close the browser and go back in, it fails again.

To paraphrase the other thread, you must either colocate SharePoint and Office Web Apps on the same APM VIP using the steps from the deployment guide, or not use APM at all for Office Web Apps.

  • I read through that thread. Not 100% sure of what they meant but I think I got it now. I will need to test on the weekend.

So essential, right now I have an APM with one VS for sharepoint and an LTM with 2 VS (sharepoint and web apps). What I need to do is change the LTM to have a single VS with both sharepoint and OWA behind it with an Irule to determine the pool to use.

    Correct?

If both your SharePoint and Web Apps traffic passes through the APM VIP, you need to make sure that the Web Apps FQDN is added to the Access Profile as an additional domain. That should allow APM to SSO to both SharePoint and Web Apps on behalf of the user who presents the APM cookie.
