F5 Virtual Edition Limited Bandwidth

We are using a virtual F5 for testing purposes in our development environment. I know the virtual edition is limited to 10mbps throughput. However, we are seeing throughput rates coming out of the virtual F5 of about 225kbps. is there any kind of tuning that can be done to the virtual edition to allow more throughput?

  • VE is not limited to 10mbps, only the Lab version is. You can acquire VE licenses for 25Mb/s, 200Mb/s, 1Gb/s, 3G/s, 5Gb/s, and 10Gb/s. One thing to not however, the throughput throttling happens on a per CPU/tmm basis. So, if you have 2 vCPUs you have two tmm instances which means each instance can only allow 1/2 of the licenses bandwidth. If you have 4 vCPUs, each tmm can only allow 1/4 of the licenses bandwidth. I hope this helps.

  • This does indeed help. Looking into how many vCPUs we are using.

It may be that we just need to upgrade our license. Thanks for the help!

  • So we have 4 vCPUs, which would mean 2.5mbps per cpu/tmm. however, we were seeing caps at around 220kbps.

Are you seeing log entries for hitting you licensed bandwidth? Where are you seeing a 220kbps cap? measured off box or via the dashboard?
  • Nothing real heavy going on on our virtual f5 lab edition, and we're at 75%. This was definitely the problem.
