bs_module_do_precond:No preconditioning provided for module on port 2/2.4

Hi, I'm trying to add an F5 QSFP 40GB card to a VIPRON - when F5 sees the card it gets and error of "err bcm56xxd[6441]: 012c0012:3: bs_module_do_precond:No preconditioning provided for module on port 2/2.4" And the bundle LINK 2/2.4 id down. Hopefully somebody has seen this error before and can steer me in the right direction.

VIPRON 4480 with two 4300 Blades.

BIG-IP Level - 12.1.0

Error: info bcm56xxd[6441]: 012c0012:6: 2/2.4 QSFP part OPT-0025 does not support DDM. err bcm56xxd[6441]: 012c0012:3: bs_module_do_precond:No preconditioning provided for module on port 2/2.4 info bcm56xxd[6441]: 012c0015:6: Link: 2/2.4 is DOWN

Regards, Michael

  • Both messages here are benign. The first (does not support DDM) is just a statement that the BigIP software does not currently support DDM (digital diagnostics monitoring). See sol6097 for further information on that.

The second message regarding 'No preconditioning' is meaningless on 40gbps ports. It is only significant for 100gbps. We have a bug ID 589481 in the system to get this changed to informational, rather than err, and to only display it at all for ports that require preconditioning.

The QSFP ports work in two modes, either bundled or not. This has nothing to do with LACP bundling, but refers to whether the interface is treated as 4 x 10 gb ports, or 1 x 40gbps. Although there is only one physical port present, the network card driver presents it to the operating system as either 4 x 10gbps ports, or 1 x 40 port.
