Using Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2010 servers in the same pool

Hey DevCentral,

We're looking at migrating from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016, so there will be a period where we will have both 2010 and 2016 servers running. Is it possible to have both types in the same pool? If so, which iApp would we have to use for that? Are there any tricks to make that work?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi jleach, I would just deploy using the 2016 iApp with only 2016 servers in the pool. If they receive a request for a 2010 mailbox, they'll proxy it themselves. You'd have a problem deciding which iApp to use because persistence is required for 2010 and not 2016, but the default 2016 Outlook protocol (MAPI-over-HTTP) is not supported in the 2010 iApp. So if you wanted both versions in the pool, you'd need to deploy the 2016 iApp, disable strictness, and apply the persistence scheme from the 2010 template to all clients.

  • Hi,

We are about to migrate exchange 2010 to 2016. I reached out to F5 support for guidance on iApp configuration for the transition period where both 2010 and 2016 mailbox servers will be in coexistence, but have yet received an answer. Can you provide some feedback on how you went about it and if you ran into any issues?

    Thanks.

you can try to send the original poster a direct message, but probably your post already triggered an email.

  • your problem solved ?I am also facing similar issue.. I can connect to exchange 2016 mailbox using but unable to connect exchange 2010 mailbox. it keep asking password..what could be the problem ? can i use iApp template for exchange 2016 to publish exchnage 2016 and 2010 ? do i have to modify any irule ?

    any help would be appreicated

  • For you particular problem, I think it might be that RPC needs to be enabled. In an iAPP, ensure that "Which protocol(s) will Microsoft Outlook use to connect to Exchange?" is set to "MAPI-over-HTTP and RPC-over-HTTP" is selected.
