How to configure Portal Access for external download link

We have configured a Portal Access for one external (Internet) web page, so when users logon to the main web top, they will be present an icon for the page, and when they click the icon, they will be proxy-ed to the external webpage.
All works fine except in the page there's a link to download an .exe file. When users tried to click the link to download the .exe file, it failed with "web page cannot be displayed" error.
My guess is, because the .exe file is not actually located on F5 so it doesn't know what to do. If so, how do I configure this Portal Access properly so users can actually download the .exe file?
Thank you.

  • Since I can't read what you read easily, due to formatting, I will post it again here:

  • Does the external webpage's webserver have the file hosted? And, is it in the correct virtual directory, where the .exe URL points?

To host the file on the F5, check out these links:

  • Thank you, Shaun. We actually don't want to host that .exe file. We just want our users be able to download the file. You asked "Does the external webpage's webserver have the file hosted?", actually, no. The file is actually hosted on a third party vendor's website. The external webpage (which is owned by us, but located at a service provider) I was referring to has a link pointing to the vendor's webpage. When user click the link, they will get to (proxy-ed) the vendor's webpage. On that vendor's webpage, there's a button called "download" to actually download that .exe file. My users can get as far as to see the "download" button, but when they click, they get "webpage cannot display".

  • Hi,

do you really need it to be proxied by the F5?

If you want to add a link to the external URL, you can use a Webtop Link instead of Portal Access.

  • Is it possible that the users local policy or local HIPS does not allow them to download .exe files?

  • To test this, I would rename the file to another filetype. ie: .docx or no filetype (filename.docx or filename)
