BIG-IP DNS virtual server

History: Brand new to Big-IP DNS. Worked with LTM but not Big-IP DNS. Taking over for existing configuration.

So I'm able to trace an external IP through the firewall to it's NAT address. The NAT address is the translation address on a server in GSLB:Server:Server List>>virtual Servers:Server Name. That's as far as I can trace it. I know that it goes to an internal server but can't for the life of me figure out how the Server gets directed to the actual machine.

  • You would have to look at the WIP for the domains that are subjected to DNS load balancing. nslookup and dig are 2 tools that could help you to isolate the DNS load balancing process. The VS under the Servers list probably exist in another LTM that may or may not be in the same DC. It also depends on how the BigIP DNS is set up. This link provides an example of sub-domain delegation.
