vServer doesn't respond properly (telnet+, browser-)

Hello there! I'm very new to BIG IP, ADC, etc. and started with CBT nuggets course. Actually I've dowloaded BIG IP virtual appliance, seasoned it with trial license. I have configured vServer ip, I've got pool, everything is green and healthy. Servers (nodes) provide content, I can clearly see it by telneting and browsing servers directly with using their direct ip addresses (which appears like internal network to the ADC). But when I try to browse from external by typing vServer's ip web-browser - I got nothing. Pool counters are incrementing, but no web page is shown.

Brief topology:

my.local.net=192.168.80/24 -- 192.168.80.8(big_ip_vServer_ip) - 10.2.0.155 - pool_of_servers (10.2.0.11 +.22 +.33)

I'm trying to open from 192.168.80.150.

And the most confusing part: if I do 'telnet 192.168.80.8 80' my terminal goes through, but I can only see moving cursor and can not even see 'get / http/1.1' or something.

I reloaded all the VMs, checked all the settings, can't find the problem.

PS: and by the way, why do we need ext_ip (which I configured 192.168.80.7) and vServer (which is 192.168.80.8) ip in the same network? The only reason that I can imagine - you can config ADC from outside and you cannot config ADC by using vServer's ip. Right?

  • Check if you enabled snat on your virtual server, it is usual to select auto-map. If your servers don't have the big-ip as default route the server ends up sending the traffic to another device or straight to the client which does't recognise that connection (and reject it). For this to work you need aswell a self-ip in your 10.2.0.155 network.

    The main use of self-ip's are monitoring. Big-ip devices use then to check health status of monitored devices. Other use is snat when you choose auto-map. There are other reasons (like failover and GARPs) but I think those are the most importants.

    I hope this helps Kind regard

  • Thanks a lot for your answer, that followed me to check all the ip addresses. I found that ther was a typo in address section. Now that's working as it should.
