SAP HANA Performance with F5

Hello Experts:

We are using F5 LTM to manage connections to the SAP HANA Database. WE have used SAP HANA replication to enable HA between Primary and Secondary hosts. The SAP HANA Failover Process itself is manual, but the connections successfully failover to the new host once the DB is up and operational. We tested this design and have no issues or concerns with that.

What we are noticing is that the performance is 50% slower versus direct connection. In other words, we are seeing 50% slower performance when we route traffic through the LTM versus directly.

We wanted to know if there were any parameters on the F5-LTM configuration that would cause this to happen.

  • Yes, there are many things in the F5, or in the path you use to the F5 or out of the F5.

The first thing you need to check if the delay is caused by F5 processing/configuration. Take a tcpdump in the F5 device, and check the delay it introduces comparing packets in and out.

I wanted to give you the solution about tcpdump, but askf5 is not able to find anything at the moment (maybe Alzheimer). Just quick search in askf5 when is back for tcpdump, and you get the solution.

If is F5, you need to post the relevant part of your configuration, so I can provide some ideas.

If is not F5, you will have to look the common things like interface errors, cable problems, etc..
