F5 LTM TMOS - UDP Monitor V13.0.0 - Send Packets Feature? Number of UDP Packet's Sent per Probe

Hi All

F5 LTM V13.0.0

https://support.f5.com/csp/knowledge-center/software/BIG-IP?module=BIG-IP%20LTM&version=13.0.0

For UDP monitor's:

https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/bigip-local-traffic-manager-monitors-reference-13-0-0/3.htmlguid-06524315-f93f-47f8-b613-2ab87ffc976a

There does not seem to be a way to configure the amount of UDP packets that are sent within each probe per interval? This use to be possible within V9.3 looking at the old configuration guides with a feature called "Send Packets"

https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/bigip9_3config/BIG_IP_LTM_9_3_Config_Guide-13-1.html

I checked an interim between the two of V11.2 which also does not seem to have the feature:

https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/ltm-monitors-reference-11-2-0/3.html

Do you know if this is possible? Apologies if I am missing something obvious, I have tried configuring this by creating or modifying existing UDP monitors either by TMSH or the TMOS GUI with no luck. I also attempted to configure this in tandem with an ICMP monitor as per the notes on V9.

This is not specific for any UDP service.

Thanks!

  • Interestingly, this doesn't seem to exist in v13.0.0.

Anyway, there are some way to do that.

    Options:

1 - Add 2 or more UDP monitors

If you add 2 or more UDP monitors, with the same timings, they will be basically sending 2 or more packets in total every interval.

    2 - External Monitor

Create an external monitor, and you can use the logic you want.

    https://devcentral.f5.com/wiki/advdesignconfig.externalmonitor.ashx

3 - Just update the timers for the UDP monitor

This is the best option in my view, but does not fully provide the behaviour you want. If you lower the interval to 1 sec, and leave the timeout for 16 sec, after the first request that counts 0 sec, you will get 16 attempts, and only after 16 attemps and no response the pool member will marked down. You can change to any value you want, this was just an example.
