Is upgrading from 11.5.4 to 12.1.3 without management port possible?

I need to update the F5 from 11.5.4 to 12.1.3 without using the management ip. The management port isn't connected and the F5 is in a remote location so it isn't an option.

The knowledge base documentation[0] has the F5 going into standby mode during the installation process. However the documentation looks like it is assuming a clustered setup with a rolling upgrade. Also the dev central youtube video shows a system upgrade with only a system reboot without mention of a management ip[1] so it's not clear whether the management ip is truly a requirement.

  • Technically mgmt interface is not needed if you have a self-ip you can access.

However, if you have no mgmt interface access or serial port access and you configuration migration didn't work during migration you would likely loose access to your F5 as some or all of your configuration wouldn't load post reboot.
