Iperf VIP pointing to iperf running on the same F5

I am looking at creating a VIP which forwards traffic to iperf running on the same F5 on some port. I started iperf on the management interface and can run iperf tests fine if I connect directly to it. Then I created a VIP in another vlan with management interface as its pool member, enabled monitor and the pool came up green, but I could not see any traffic to management interface when I tried connecting to that VIP (pointing to mgmt interface as pool member). I tried with no SNAT, as well as SNAT using a SNAT pool in the same subnet as management interface.

I wasn't able to use the loopback or the self IP on that VLAN as pool members ("The requested pool member is already in use as a self IP address" and "IP Address 127.0.0.1 is invalid, loopback not allowed.")

Having another machine running iperf isn't really an option. So I must either run it on this F5 or not run it at all. Hope someone can help.

  • What are you trying to achieve? What is the reason for running iPerf? The reason I ask is F5 has two Operating Systems, TMOS which does your traffic management and load balancing, manages your self IPs and is fine tuned for performance and moving packets quickly. Whereas the Linux operating system, where the Management interface is managed is not as finely tuned and not designed for packet flow.

What you are probably experiencing is an internal routing issue (packets not routing back via VIP but routing internally) Even if you were able to get this to work, because of the distinct OSs, you will not achieve accurate performance statistics through the LTM.
