F5 BigIP DNS request/response

I'm trying to understand the flow of DNS response for GTM. My flow, user sends request to resolve gtm we have Windows DNS which has a delegation for GTM. The delegation has GTM Listeners setup as Name Server for GTM. Since listeners are the authority they respond to user not the Windows DNS. If someone can help elaborate on this, thanks.

  • Hello,

First let's read this article about DNS query processing on BIG-IP systems.

so to answer your question, ist depending your windows DNS configuration: Recursive or iterative query of your Windows dns:

A recursive query is a kind of query, in which the DNS server, who received your query will do all the job of fetching the answer, and giving it back to you. During this process, the DNS server might also query other DNS server's in the internet on your behalf, for the answer.

In an iterative query, the name server, will not go and fetch the complete answer for your query, but will give back a referral to other DNS server's, which might have the answer.
