Configuring HA for an existing standalone BIG-IP LTM

We already have a standalone BIGIP LTM/ASM operating as a standalone. Now we have purchased another device and need to configure it as in HA for active-standby. Need guidance if the below procedure is right

  • Activate license on the new device
  • Configure management IP address
  • Configure all non failover objects like VLAN's, SelfIP's, trunks/Port-channels.
  • Configure HA VLAN and HA IP
  • From Current active device in device trust add new F5 device as peer authority device
  • Configure config syc, failover network and mirroring on both devices
  • Create one sync group and one sync-failover group and add both the devices
  • Finally sync the groups from active F5 to new F5.

Is the above order of operations correct? Any precaution that needs to be taken to ensure that the new F5 device does not overwrite or take over as active.

Thanks.

  • Hi

I would configure config syc, failover network and mirroring ips on both devices prior to doing any HA handshakes between the two boxes. It is this config that determines how the boxes talk to each other.

You also missed out the most important step which should be No.1 - take a pre-change backup!

As long as you sync the config the correct way then you shouldn't overwrite anything.
