GSLB for clients using LDNS 8.8.8.8

Hi all, I have a design question. Most my customers points to public DNS 8.8.8.8 as their LDNS. If I use dynamic LB methods with probing and metric collections, how does this work well if they use this public DNS? Most time they are not LB to the nearest and best performing DC. Is there a better way to configure GSLB to perform accurate LB to these clients?

  • The issue you are having is that using a dynamic load balancing method, BIG-IP DNS collection performance metrics from each Server and Virtual Server from within each Data Centre and so the DNS server making the query is not really relevant in the Load Balancing decision.

If you want to load balance to the closest Data Centre/Virtual Server then you should look at using Topology K13412: Overview of BIG-IP DNS Topology records (11.x - 13.x) to define a set to location rules.

Also F5 DNS is designed to be used both in a public and private DNS infrastructure so your configuration will work find even with your customer using Google DNS as their LDNS configurations.
