Obfuscating email addresses on DC?

Hi folks,

I noticed that I've started to get spam sent to the address I use for DC posts to the Codeshare. It looks like google has been able to index some of the Codeshare posts without authenticating (?!).

Could the email addresses be obfuscated automatically by the forum application? Is there an add-on for ActiveForums that could do this?

I've gone through and changed the @ and . in my posts, but I was thinking it would be handy to have this done automatically.

Thanks,

Aaron

  • Aaron, your email should not be displayed in online content unless you are using it for your login name. Where is your email address getting displayed exactly?

We've gone through some special hoops to allow some of the protected content to be included in googles index and that is really the only way we can get a fully integrated search using their technology.

Again, if you can let us know exactly where your email is getting displayed, we'll see what's going on.

For those out there reading this, we do not recommend using your email address as a login name as that will be what's associated with forum posts and other contributions you make on the site. This is supposed to be a way to make yourself anonymous to the outside world and we recommend it be used that way.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about in the codeshare upload form, Joe. There's an option there that allows you to include your email address in case anyone wants to collaborate, ask questions, etc. As it stands now, this adds your actual, valid email address. I'll update it to use the standard online separated form of user at domain dot com.

  • I don't see your email in that cached page. We had to allow our content into Google's index to be able to use their custom search. The content on our site is still protected with a login so unless you have an account on DC, you won't be able to add content, but viewing can now be accomplished with cached content on Google if that's your desire.

As for obfucation of email addresses in post content. I'm leary of messing with the forum code in that way. If someone posted their email and wanted it posted then we would be doing the wrong thing. The real issue is that email addresses should not be present on the site unless the user specifically enters them. Let us know of those situations where that process is broken and we'll get it fixed.

  • Aaron, I'm sorry we put you in this situation. I'll do a db search in the forum entries and look for email addresses and see what I can do to manually obfuscate them. Unfortunately, what's in Googles cache may be there for a while.

I didn't foresee this issue when I opened our content up to Google.

  • No worries, I've already updated the ones in the codeshare. And like you say, it's already cached. It's not a big deal for me though, as it's an address I created specifically for posting to mailing lists and using here. I just thought it would be good to obfuscate the addresses for other people if it's going to be indexed by a search engine.

  • Aaron, all of your posts with your gmail address have been updated with an obfuscated email address.
