Sync GTM with different OS than master GTM

I have a GTM in production running 11.6.0 and configured a new GTM with 13.1.1. I ran the gtm_add script and the process ran, but it doesn't show that it is in sync. netstat _anp | grep 3d shows that it didn't connect. I did change the sync group name from default to something else and enabled sync, to no avail.

  • I suggest you check to make sure you have the same version of big3d running on your BIG-IP v11.6.0 system as you have on your BIG-IP v13.1.1 system. See K13703: Overview of big3d version management for more details. Per the article: "Sync group members should run the same big3d version"

  • They don't. I thought it was OK to run different big3d versions? How do I downgrade the device running 13.1.1 to 11.6 big3d?

  • You want to upgrade the big3d version on your v11.6.0 system to the big3d version on your v13.1.1 system. It should be located in the /shared/bin/ directory. You can copy the v13.1.1 version to your v11.6.0 system (make a backup of the existing version first), then restart big3d. The article I linked to has instructions in it. If that still doesn't clear things up, then we can take it from there.

  • The 11.6 device is in production and I don't want to interrupt the process on that device. Can I downgrade the 13.1.1 device to the 11.6 big3d version and then run sync and shit down the 11.6 devices after?

  • I do not suggest downgrading your v13.1.1 system's big3d to the 11.6.0 version. Since you already have both GTM systems in a sync group - a production system and what's not yet production - my recommendation at this point is to contact F5 Technical Support and open a ticket.

  • I'll open a ticket, but I don't see how it would essentially harm anything, since the 13.1.1 devices aren't in production. What I'm trying to accomplish is get the 13.1.1 to sync the configs over and then cut the 11.6 devices.

  • Per K13703, you should not run a version of big3d that is older than the BIG-IP software version for the system. It's OK to run a newer version, but not an older version. Given the disparity between releases though (11 to 13), I still recommend reaching out to Tech Support for guidance.
