Using a VE system to stage config for other older environments

Hi,

We're looking at deploying some VE instances for testing and I was wondering if there could be found some mileage in using them to prestage configuration for other environments. i.e. add interfaces and vlans we'll see in other environments but unconnected to anythign in a different route domain.

BUT, the VE's will on 11.2.1 and the actual physical kit will be 10.2.4.

I'm fairly sure that this version difference makes it all totally incompatible but I thought I'd ask about it incase that's not the case and there was some potential benefit for doing this, even if there were some level of manual intervention on the exported configs.

  • Considering the difference in major TMOS software version I wouldn't consider any tests you run as valid or worthwhile. The configuration would be very similar (and likely compatible) but the actual operation of each feature could and likely will be very different despite that.

  • If you can't test your configuration I still don't see the benefit. Regardless, the configuration should be mostly compatible, but not entirely. You'll need to work out what is and what isn't, it shouldn't be too hard.

Why not just downgrade the VEs?
