It allows the client to communicate with other hosts on the subnet that is local to the client (Or not).

For example... If I'm at home on my localsubnet I have my desktop and a NAS drive. If enabled, then my desktop can still communicate with the NAS drive after starting the APM network process.

if disabled, the the local subnet communications between my desktop and the local NAS are routed via the VPN. So will probably fail...

Only really of use when the client network is simple (i.e. single subnet). if the clients home network is routed, and they have necessary services on different subjects of the local network, then they'll possibly have issues (Note there's no easy way to tell from the APM server what the client network looks like, so assuming they're a single subject is usually the best way to go).
