CPU count 4, Active CPUs 2 ... huh?

Big-IP 2000s system ... in System | Configuration | General, it says we have 4 CPUs, but only 2 are active.

What does that mean? /var/log/dmesg says "Brought up 4 CPUs" ... but doesn't provide much add'l detail.

Does TMOS leave CPUs idle until they are needed based on load?

I was trying to explain this to my customer, realized the below is the best explanation.

Select HELP section in your GUI and you will see: ( System ›› Configuration : Device : General)

Displays the total number of processors that are active in the system. On a platform with multiple logical processors on a physical processor, shows the number of logical processors for CPU Count, while the Active CPUs section shows the status of physical processors. Note that there is always only one TMM executing on the physical core at any time. This is correct behavior.
