How to: vcmp - upgrade a guest hotfix?

Host - 11.4.1 HF5

Guest A - 11.4.1 HF5 but want to go HF7

Do I need to upgrade the guest ltm on the guest gui or can I upgrade the guest hotfix using the host-vcmp>guest list>hotfix dropdown?

I thought there was a way to do it purely at the host gui to upgrade my guest hotfixes/OS? I was trying to avoid importing the base/hf images on the guest to save space. Since I have it on the Host device... i thought i could reprovision the guest image to accept a new hotfix?

Im hoping to learn best practice to upgrade the guest hotfix/os? Using guest instance or host instance?

  • Hi, you will upgrade the vCMP guest.

The guest needs to have the base installation image and the hotfix in /shared/images/ locally.

Installing both base and hotfix from host is available only for new vCMP guest deployment, afaik.

Btw, have a look at the following:

    tmsh list vcmp guest

Very likely you need to provide the initial hotfix as well in the vCMP host´s /shared/images/ directory to recover the system after an RMA.

    Thanks, Stephan

Unless recommended practices have changed since I last used vCMP - use the host to install the base image/hotfix upon initial deployment. all other upgrades (full release or hotfix) are then handled within the guest as if the guest was a non-virtual F5.

You can delete the base and HF images once you've installed them on a guest - they don't have to continue taking up disk space. You can use SCP to move image files between host/guest instead of uploading each image/hotfix file from a remote machine. in v11.6.0, vCMP guests can install images from the vCMP host (https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/vcmp-administration-viprion-11-6-0/8.html)

    • Good point regarding v11.6. I wasn´t aware of it since I currently support clients with vCMP on v11.2.1 and v11.5.1 only. +1 :)
