im using vmware workstation 10, opens the same file without a problem.
try and upgrade your vmware workstation or at least download the trial just to make sure that the version causes the issue.
CirrusDownload the ova file and open it using vmware.
not sure about player but workstation will surely open it.

EmployeeIf I remember correctly, I am using the ESXi within VMWare Fusion and the caveat is to not upgrade the VM if it prompts.
