Best way to learn iRules?

All,

This might have been asked a few times, but can someone guide me to a good resource to learn iRules for the F5 WAF? I've seen the iRules 101 docs on the f5 site, but was wondering if there was anything a little more in depth?

Do you recommend reading a TCL book? Or does f5 have a slightly different version of TCL used in their systems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

  • I read a book by Steven Iveson that I found really helpful. It's called 'An Introduction to F5 Networks Irules'. The other thing I would suggest, if you haven't already, is to read up on http.

Matt. I agree with Ian about the book. There's also great resources on DC too, specifically the iRules 101 series. Advise you search for this on DC.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hey Matt, I'd obviously concur with Ian and Nathan regarding the book as I'm the author. However, I'm conscious of the only negative criticism I've had about it, which is that the title suggests that it's a beginners guide. It's not (yet) and it won't hold your hand and walk you through step by step. Rather, it covers in detail all the elements and components that make up an iRule, good practise and so on. It also serves as a command and event reference. I personally think the mass of included iRule examples are enough to enable most people to teach themselves but clearly not everyone agrees. I do intend to rectify this in the third edition sometime later this year and as usual, it'll be a free update on Kindle.
