Need to replace ancient F5 Load Balacers, Questions on used

We have 2 very ancient F5 load balancers and was looking to replace with 2 newer F5 Networks BIG-IP 3600 LTM. I see a lot of these units used for sale (ebay etc) and had some questions:

  1. How reliable are these units? (it looks like support contract can be bought till 2020, Software updates till Oct 1, 2017)
  2. Will I need to purchase a license key? If so how much do these run for production env. ?
  3. Some units are sold without HD.. Why do some units have HD and other without? Is this a part that can be replaced feasibly?

Thanks! Lawrence

If this is for your organization and looking to implement in a production environment. It would be better to talk to F5 sales rep. If you want to setup a personal lab that's when you look at ebay, etc...

Yes, License Keys needs to be purchased if you are buying from other than F5 or F5 certified vendors.

  • Hi,

Did you look at virtual edition licenses instead of buying an appliance on eBay?

You can find VE licenses for throughput 25M, 200M, 1G, 3G and 10G and available for VMWare, HyperV, KVM and Xen

If it is for lab, you can also purchase VE LAB license limited to 10Mbps
